Assessing our impact on the climate has been
in our brand DNA since Day 1.
To be a leader in these assessments and to
promote a circular economy, measuring the
carbon
"used" in the production and
manufacturing of our products is vitally
important.
This is where the global Carbon Budget comes into focus. Simply put, the Carbon Budget works towards the goal of keeping our planet's temperature from rising more than 1.5°C - which is in line with targets set by the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP).
In order to achieve this, we (all of us) need to reduce our annual human-caused greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by more than half by 2030. No small target, but achievable it individuals, communities, and policymakers make the required efforts.

Using the Carbon Budget we can calculate our Daily Carbon Quota, which is how much carbon each individual person can "use" per day to keep us within the Carbon Budget. Working backwards from this 2030 target, the Carbon Budget for the year 2022 is 53.6 GtCOge. This is our collective human-caused carbon emissions budget for the entire planet. From here, we can derive our Daily Carbon Quota to be 16,668 gCO2e per global citizen.
Maison/Made partnered with the premier carbon accounting firm, Carbon Calories, to calculate how our products fit into your Daily Carbon Quota, to give you the power of knowing how "carbon efficient" our products are. This is next-level transparency.
These Carbon Statements are reviewed in meticulous detail - from how much fuel the tractor uses, to the energy that is used to store the products, to the materials (ie glass, plastic, cardboard, etc) that make up the packaging. Everything is analyzed by Carbon Calories with a fine-toothed comb to ensure that the Carbon Statement is accurate.
In order for every global citizen to be able to make better informed decisions, we know that participation by other brands in this transparency is essential so that we, as consumers, can easily make everyday decisions with the environment top of mind. We hope that many many more companies decide to join us, and help make the future a better place for us all to inhabit.
