From Seed to Bottle

All our hydrosols are grown on the same farm, by the same master Biodynamic gardener in New York, close to our studio.

From the very beginning of the plant’s life, through its growth and flowering within a very well draining soil, to the time of harvest, we provide our plants an environment that thoroughly enhances their medicinal qualities, a gift of the Biodynamic® approach to soil and plants.

HOW A HYDROSOL IS BORN

Step 1 Once the harshness of winter and the last frost have passed, the self-seeding Peppermint begins to sprout in their dedicated beds. The stalks that become our hydrosols are treated with special Biodynamic sprays to foster fertility and vibrancy.

Step 2 Later during summer and once they have reached their desired maturity, our master gardener and distiller begins to plan their harvest, knowing from 30 years of experience, the best time to capture the abundant plant compounds and cellular water at a time in their growth cycle when the plant is at its most vital and essential oil production is high.

Step 3 Within minutes of harvesting, the peppermint stalks are placed into a classic copper alembic still. Natural well spring water is heated to create the steam that then passes through the plant material, condensing into hydrosol and filling the greenhouse with its intoxicating classic minty aroma.

Step 4 The sterilized jars filled with newly produced hydrosol are refrigerated until filled into the very bottles that end up in your hands.

The Result Every step of this process is focused on the details to give us the most decadent hydrosols we’ve ever seen. Like an exquisite wine, our fine hydrosols are the result of their terroir - the location and method of growing, the precise time of harvest, the exact distillation process and bottling.

A message from our master distiller

“Our hydrosols come from the steam distillation of our medicinal plants.

Made in micro batches to ensure only first-choice plants are used, we take great care through each step of the distillation process.”

“From the very beginning of the plant’s life, through its growth and flowering within a very well draining soil, to the time of harvest, we provide our plants an environment that thoroughly enhances their medicinal qualities, a gift of the Biodynamic® approach to soil and plants.

Involving specific sprays, attention to the quality of the soil, timing of intervention in regards to the moon and other energetic aspects, our goal is to foster a high content of qualitative medicinal constituents. This you will find in the hydrosols we make.”

SUSTAINABILITY

Maison/Made partnered with the premier carbon accounting firm, Carbon Calories, to calculate how our products fit into your Daily Carbon Quota, to give you the power of knowing how “carbon efficient” our products are. This is next-level transparency.

The Carbon Statements above are reviewed in meticulous detail from seed to bottle - from how much fuel the tractor uses, to the energy that is used to store the products, to the materials (ie glass, plastic, cardboard, etc) that make up the packaging, and the carbon these elements consumed in their manufacturing. Everything is analyzed by Carbon Calories with a fine-toothed comb to ensure that the Carbon Statement is accurate.

This work gives you an idea how much of your carbon footprint you’re using with each spritz of our hydrosols. We hope that many many more companies decide to join us, and help make the future a better place for us all to inhabit.

Biodynamic agriculture is the traditional approach to farming that goes beyond organic to grow in the most sustainable, symbiotic manner possible. Its techniques work in harmony with Nature instead of exploiting it. Doing so produces the most nutrient dense, vibrant plants that are considered the highest quality in the world.

We chose to grow our own plants biodynamically, use Biodynamic ingredients, and acquire the certification because we believe the history of Biodynamics should also be our future.

Our herb garden is focused on plants that have remarkable properties specific to skincare. Biodynamics shows us that those plants that nourish the skin, also happen to nourish the soil. There is a certain symbiotic harmony here: vitality nurturing vitality.

Following the Biodynamic standards of agriculture has enabled us to grow significantly from our first little patch of calendula, despite significant weather-related challenges, for which we are grateful, as it strengthened our resolve and required us to lean significantly on our familial gardening secrets, cultivated over centuries of tending to our land.

For each product in the Maison Collection we develop a customized extraction blend employing our proprietary Complexe du Jardin™ method. This specific method meticulously saturates an oil with the nourishing medicinal properties of the plants we grow in our jardin following the Biodynamic® principles. As we grow each plant exclusively for each product, each extract is a targeted synergy of botanicals that addresses the desired actions of the product. This is why there are different herbs in our Extrait de Maison than in our Rituel de Maison.
